The 20th edition of GeMUN 2023 took place from February 23rd to 25th in Palazzo Ducale.

This year we were back at Palazzo Ducale and got to meet our fellow delegates, chairs, security and staff members and everyone else under the motto “Echoes of our times”.

We were so pleased that besides the Genovese schools Liceo Linguistico Grazia Deledda, Deledda International School, Duchessa di Galliera, Pertini, Gobetti, Nautico San Giorgio/ Nautico Colombo and Deutsche Schule Genua, also Arturo Malignani school from Udine and Spinelli school from Torino participated. We also got to meet old acquaintances from Espergaerde Gymnasium (Denmark), Rosary Sisters’ High School and Schools of Nazareth (Israel), Schule Schloss Salem (Germany) and TED Bursa Koleji from Turkey again. New to the conference were the students of American School Dharan in Saudi Arabia and we were pleased to welcome them in our midst.

Overall, about 550 students from 18 schools met in eight different committees to debate on topics including managing waste disposal, women’s rights, disease control, artificial intelligence and the climate migration. The International Court of Justice had to decide on a very current issue: “Application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination” (Azerbaijan vs. Armenia).

This year’s Team GeMUN DSG worked very hard to prepare for the conference. Especially our youngest delegates Matteo, Hermann, Blue and Ruggero (year 9) were enthusiastic to meet their fellow delegates in General Assembly to share their opinions and to learn as much as possible. They were joined by Ginevra, Bianca, Margherita, Mariasole, Clarissa, Elisa and Pietro (year 10). Mariasole and Elisa (year 10) were delegates of ECOSOC in Camera di Commercio. Irene (year 12) and Lukas (year 11) got to debate matters of international security as delegates of the UK and Albania in the Security Council. Francesca (year 12) was a delegate of Zimbabwe in GeMUN’s newest committees Environmental Assembly. As officers Zoe, Fabiola and Ginevra (year 11) headed the GA committees DISEC and SOCHUM as well as UNEA.

It was great to make new friends, to discuss important issues, to dress formally, to spend time and to laugh together about messages from the gossip box and – of course - to rock the dance floor at the traditional GeMUN Dance Party. We hope to see you all again next february, for the 21st edition of the Genoa Model United Nations!
